Smolinski Down, Edwards Up

Jake Smolinski was optioned to AAA Round Rock prior to the start of the game in Cleveland today and Jon Edwards was called up. The hometown kid from Keller has a chance to shore up the bullpen after posting a 1.15 ERA with 20 strikeouts, 5 walks, and 2 runs (both earned) allowed in 15.2 innings pitched for the Express. Drafted as an outfielder by the Cardinals in 2006, Edwards was released in 2010 and spent 2011 playing for the San Angelo Colts and the Alpine Cowboys, where he converted to a pitcher. The Rangers signed him to a minor league deal in December of 2011 and he spent the 2012 season playing rookie ball and rose quickly, finishing the year at AA Frisco.
